Archaeological research on the Six Dynasties period in Jiangnan, China

"The Archaeological Study on the Six Dynasties in Jiangnan,China"

Rokuichi Shobo, December 2014

The Six Dynasties of Jiangnan, which ruled the area south of the Yangtze River during the Wei-Jin-Southern and Northern Dynasties period, were regimes established by the Han Chinese who, having been driven out by foreign invaders, lost the Central Plains, the land where China's ancient capitals were located. However, on the other hand, they exerted considerable influence on culture both within and outside of China, as well as on the international order.
This book, from the perspective of southern society, focuses on the Six Dynasties of Jiangnan as the first "legitimate" Chinese dynasties to appear in the south. How did the Six Dynasties of Jiangnan become a Chinese dynasty despite being located in a peripheral region? What was the locality of the south in the Six Dynasties culture, and what is the historical significance of southern society? Based on the results of rapidly advancing archaeological excavations in recent years and the author's own field research, the book archaeologically analyzes and compares the imperial tombs and metalwork of the north and south, highlighting the characteristics of the Six Dynasties of Jiangnan as the culmination of southern society.
